A lapidary was a book that listed what a stone was, and what it did

Medieval lapidaries put a gem's hardness and colour beside its powers over snakebite and sleep, without much distinction between the two. This site keeps both, but keeps them apart: the science sections carry measured facts, and the energy and lore sections carry tradition, labelled as such.

Gemological data (formula, crystal system, Mohs hardness, specific gravity, refractive index, sources) follows standard mineralogical references. Healing associations follow common crystal-healing practice and are not medical advice.

There are no photographs. Each stone is rendered as a three-dimensional form derived from its real crystal system, in its own palette. A cubic mineral is a cube or octahedron; a hexagonal one a six-sided prism; glass and opal are amorphous blobs.

Amethyst is the exception. Its cluster is the same procedural geometry, but rendered ahead of time in Cycles as a turntable you can drag, so it gets real refraction and caustics that a browser cannot compute at interactive speed.
